The Whitemarsh Township Public Works Department collects an average of 1,500 tons (or ~6,000 cubic yards) of leaves each year through the Curbside Leaf Pick-Up Program. Once the leaves are collected, the public works crew run the leaves through the tub grinder and then set them in windrows at the Township Public Works facility. In about a year's time, the ground up leaves become a viable product called leaf compost. Once the leaf compost has reached its completion stage, the compost is then delivered to the residents of the Township for a nominal fee.
Over the years, the leaf composting program has grown popular with the Township residents. In response to the demand, the staff at the Public Works Department have worked to time the composting process just right so that by the time spring arrives, they can haul the finished product for the residents to use for their spring gardening, making room for the next season.
Residents also have an option to purchase double ground mulch. Double ground mulch is made up of yard waste and brush debris that the Public Works Department have collected in previous years. Double ground mulch degrades at a favorable rate to return nutrients to the soil, proving to be beneficial to the health of trees.
The Township charges $12 per yard for leaf compost and $15 dollars per yard for double ground mulch. The Township Public Works Department delivers compost orders for three yards or six yards per order.
Residents who would like to order delivery of compost should call the Township at 610-825-3535 and speak with the receptionist.
Compost will be available for delivery beginning April 2, 2012.
