Cop Camp

Those interested in participating in the 2012 program can fill out an application below and submit it to the Police Department.

The Whitemarsh Police Department sponsors an interactive Cop Camp for 10 & 11yr olds to be held at Police Headquarters in Lafayette Hill for one week each summer.

The entire program, including Official Cop Camp T-shirts and hats, is being provided free of charge to the participants of the camp. The camp is designed to encourage local adolescents to respect the law, stand up to peer pressure and avoid the many temptations affecting this impressionable age group.

Each day begins with exercise and military drill. New additions to the program include a bomb squad demo and Cadets helping paramedics rescue victims of a mock auto accident followed by a Med-Evac helicopter dust off.

Returning again for the fifth year are police motorcycles, K-9 dogs, Crime Scene Detectives, Bike Patrols and a Hostage Rescue Team. Other hands-on events include radar speed checks and bicycle safety. Cadets will also man hose lines to put out real fires supervised by Barren Hill Fire Company.

The trainees will investigate crimes, gather evidence and “arrest” perpetrators. But it doesn’t stop there, the local District Judge will preside over a mock trial in District Court where the cadets will prosecute the case or defend the perpetrator in order to learn about our legal system.

Highlights of the week include a police obstacle course and daily outdoor cookouts.

The camp concludes with a multi-media show highlighting the week’s events and a swearing-in ceremony on Friday afternoon. The Police Chief will present Official ID cards, group photos and Diplomas. But more significantly, each Cadet leaves knowing every police officer on a first name basis.

Contact the Whitemarsh Police Department for more information. Download the 2012 Cop Camp Application to sign up for the next Comp Cap.

DNT TXT N DRV Campaign

(Press Release - March 23, 2011)

The Whitemarsh Township Police Department in collaboration with the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and Germantown Academy has kicked off a pledge campaign to educate students, faculty, and the community on the inherent dangers of texting while driving.

This teen driver safety initiative called Project Ignition, sponsored by State Farm and coordinated by the National Youth Leadership CouncilĀ®, has selected 26 high schools from the United States and Canada that have each received $2,000 each to implement student-led campaigns this school year. The Whitemarsh Police Department submitted the grant application on behalf of the area high schools.

This campaign is part of a the recently established Plymouth Whitemarsh High School/Germantown Academy S.A.F.E. Coalition that allows the best and brightest from both schools to assist school and community leaders in the prevention of hazardous decisions that are stereotypically made by an alarming number of teenagers.

This campaign establishes a public relations crusade called the "DNT TXT N DRV" Pledge Campaign.

Project Outline

Two separate high schools in the same community: one public, one private, working together on one mission; educating students, faculty, and the public on the dangers of texting while driving.

Our ultimate objective is to prevent needless injuries and deaths by implementing several public safety campaigns in our High Schools that will ultimately have teenage drivers pledging never to text and operate a motor vehicle at the same time.

The True Reality

The majority of drivers today, both teenagers and adults, admit to texting while driving. Somehow drivers rationalize this behavior due to the fact that it takes but a mere moment. Text messaging from our phones while we are driving is a cultural epidemic. The "DNT TXT N DRV" Pledge Campaign is working to change behaviors and save lives by educating students on the countless scores of tragedies caused by the decision to text while driving.
