The Whitemarsh Township Planning Commission worked with the Montgomery County Planning Commission since 1997 in updating the 1964 Comprehensive plan. In the summer of 2001, a previous draft was submitted to the Board of Supervisors for consideration of scheduling public hearings. At that time, the Whitemarsh Township Residents Association (WTRA) expressed concern that the draft did not strongly emphasis a focus on managing growth and preserving open space. Consequently, the Board directed the Planning Commission to reexamine the draft and to incorporate a more open space conservation orientation as presented in the detailed policy brief provided by the WTRA. At the same time, the Township also embarked on considering the inclusion of the Natural Land Trust’s “Growing Greener” concepts into the Subdivision and Land Development Code.
